On 11 April 2024, the EU SME Centre, together with the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, hosted a policy meeting where Scott Rozelle, co-director of Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research at Stanford University, and Ernan Cui, Consumer Analyst at Gavekal Dragonomics, explored the demographic challenges and their impact on China’s economy and society.
Scott Rozelle delved into the complexities of the rural-urban divide in China, highlighting its direct effects on China’s overall transition from a middle-income country to a high-income country. He stressed that significant investment in rural education, health and nutrition were pivotal to bridging the current urban-rural divide.
Ernan Cui’s presentation focused on the challenges of an aging population and the consequent economic ramifications. She emphasised that current trends point to a slowdown in economic growth paired with demographic decline, innovative policy solutions could counter the negative impact of these trends.
