| China accounts for almost 42% of all building worldwide. Currently, two billion square meters of new buildings are being constructed annually with more than 40% of China’s total energy consumption directly or indirectly connected to construction. Almost 1/3 of all water consumption is allotted to the building area while each m2 of building space consumes about four times more energy as compared to European averages. As a consequence, the Chinese government is beginning to recognise the potential of ‘green building’ and promotes energy-saving, resource-efficient and sustainable building projects as per its five-year plans. This offers great potential for European SMEs in this sector, from engineers and architects to real estate consultants, building material suppliers and providers of innovative technical solutions. Mr. Dirk Laeremans is currently Managing Director of Orientas, a consultancy for market entry and M&A, specialised in building and green technology. He has been working in and with China for the last 12 years. Previously, Mr. Laeremans was Sales Manager and Plant Manager at a greenfield production plant of Bekaert (www.bekaert.com) in Jiangsu and Development Director at CRH (www.crh.com), a large building materials company. Through his work, Mr. Laeremans has built an extensive network in the Chinese building materials and green building industry.
