Product safety has long been an issue of key importance for Chinese regulators. To ensure the safety of consumer goods, China has implemented a solid legal framework, supported by a well-established and comprehensive system of industrial standards in operation throughout the country. Companies caught to be not in compliance with product safety regulations and standards have been forced to pay high fines and incur significant reputational damage.

One of the key tools used by Chinese regulators to ensure product safety is through certification and licensing schemes. In most cases, these are sector-specific and overseen by different competent authorities, and may have different conformity assessment requirements, procedures and methods. Navigating through these schemes might be difficult for European SMEs; mistakes during the process might result in significant delays and extra costs, ultimately impacting the entry of a consumer product into the Chinese market.

This webinar organised by the EU SME Centre and the Danish Chamber of Commerce will provide a thorough explanation of the mechanisms in place for the control and enforcement of product safety in China, highlighting the major differences between the Chinese and European systems. It will also elaborate on the impact of these regulations, focus in detail on specific product categories (e.g. electronic products; home appliances) and certification schemes (e.g. CCC, ROHS Regulation, Energy Label; etc.), finally providing guidance and good practices to EU SMEs for compliance.
