BenCham, in collaboration with NANC / Neso China and the NVP, is proud to welcome the Dutch journalist Joris Luyendijk in Beijing. During a unique 2 day event, Joris will present his most recent book and international bestseller “Swimming with the Sharks: My Journey into the World of Bankers”. In his native Holland Swimming with Sharks (‘Dit Kan Niet Waar Zijn’) became the best sold book of 2015. In September, the book will also make its introduction China.

On September 19, Joris Luyendijk will present his book “Swimming with the Sharks” at the Dutch Embassy. Together with his visit in China, the book is also translated into Chinese. During the event, the first Chinese copy will be handed over to the Dutch Ambassador, Mr. Ron Keller.

At the reception following the presentation, guests have the possibility to meet Joris Luyendijk in person.

About Joris Luyendijk

Joris Luyendijk (Amsterdam, 1971) is a London-based journalist and writer. His most recent book is Swimming with Sharks (2015, Faber Guardian), an anthropological investigation into the world of banking in the City of London. A keen advocate of innovation in journalism, Luyendijk likes to immerse himself in a subject for years while drawing on his training as an anthropologist to bring out the stories ignored or missed by mainstream media. Swimming with Sharks has become an international bestseller, earning great reviews and very good sales in the UK, Belgium and Germany while topping the charts in Sweden and Finland.

Earlier work by Luyendijk focuses on the six years he spent in the Middle East, first as researcher and later as correspondent. ‘Hello Everybody’ (Faber, 2010) offers an account of how Middle-East correspondent really work rather than how they pretend they work. The French edition was awarded with the Prix des Assises du Journalisme in 2010. The book also contains some rather good, if rather polically incorrect, jokes that Arabs and Jews tell each other.

Tijdens dit unieke twee daagse evenement zal Joris zijn internationale bestseller en tevens meest recente boek ‘Dit Kan Niet Waar Zijn’ introduceren. “Dit Kan Niet Waar Zijn” was in zijn thuisland Nederland het best verkochte boek van 2015 en zal nu dit success doorzetten in China, waar het in September gepubliceerd zal worden.

Op 18 September presenteert Joris Luyendijk, in XL Bar & Restaurant in Sanlitun, zijn boek “Dit Kan Niet Waar Zijn” aan de Nederlandse community in Beijing. Er is een boeklezing en signeer sessie voorzien. Na afloop is er de mogelijkheid om samen met Joris een borrel te drinken en verder te praten.

Over Joris Luyendijk

Hij schreef columns voor het NRC, presenteerde Zomergasten en brak door bij het grote publiek met het boek ‘Het zijn net mensen’. Hierin levert hij op geraffineerde wijze kritiek op de manier waarop journalisten over het Midden-Oosten berichtten. Het levert hem kritiek op van collega’s, maar ook de prijs ‘Journalist van het jaar’. Vier jaar na het uitbrengen van ‘Het zijn net mensen’ wordt Luyendijk gevraagd om een maand mee te lopen op het Binnenhof. Hierover schrijft hij ‘Je hebt het niet van mij maar…’ over de dagelijkse politieke beslommeringen in Den Haag.

Vanaf 2011 gaat hij voor The Guardian vanuit een antropologisch perspectief de financiële wereld van de Londense City beschrijven. Hij houdt zijn bevindingen bij op een Banking blog. Door die ervaringen wordt hij op 14 november 2012 uitgenodigd voor een horing in het Engelse parlement over de normen van de banken. Vlak daarna doet hij op 1 januari 2013 verslag in ‘Het brein van de bankier’ bij VPRO Tegenlicht. Deze ervaringen monden uiteindelijk uit in het boek ‘Dit kan niet waar zijn’.
