China’s industrial rise, once overshadowed by environmental concerns, is undergoing a profound transformation. Today, the country is actively tackling past ecological challenges and emerging as a global leader in green innovation. This shift, driven by ambitious policy reforms and a rapidly expanding green market, presents unprecedented opportunities for European SMEs. However, navigating this evolving landscape requires a nuanced understanding of its complexities.

China’s path to sustainability has been gradual but decisive. In the past, economic growth often took precedence over environmental considerations. However, as the consequences of pollution became undeniable, the government implemented bold measures. Initiatives such as the Green Credit Guidelines and the stringent environmental targets of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) underscore China’s commitment to sustainable development.

For European SMEs, China’s green transformation unlocks significant opportunities, particularly in renewable energy, environmental technologies, sustainability consulting, and ESG services. However, challenges remain. Many European firms face hurdles in complying with China’s stringent environmental regulations, including the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, strict controls on water and air pollution, as well as waste management.

On 24 April, the EU SME Centre and European Union Chamber of Commerce in China are organising a workshop to provide a deeper understanding of China’s green development sector, offering valuable insights into market opportunities and regulatory challenges. By equipping European SMEs with the knowledge to navigate this dynamic environment, this event aims to help them position themselves in China’s green sector.
