The workshop organised by the EU SME Centre and European Union Chamber of Commerce in China on 29 February 2024 brought together European SMEs and experts. Together, they discussed China’s current goals and incentives for carbon footprint reduction and improved energy efficiency in urban development.
EU SME Centre Team Leader Liam Jia introduced the Centre’s resources and services for European SMEs to the audience. Chen Tianqi, Senior Engineer at Arup, gave a keynote presentation touching upon innovative architecture and design for increased resilience and sustainability in China’s path towards carbon neutrality.
Johannes Weilharter, Vice Chair of the Construction WG at the European Chamber, moderated the panel discussion, delving into the ambitious goals of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan on green commitments and how companies big and small can feasibly adapt and remain in compliance with the regulations.
Panellists Nathalie Ieong, Expertise/Operations Manager at TERAO Asia, Harald Kumpfert, CEO at NECreat China, and Kay Thiede, CEO of New Musketeers Interior, discussed how European SMEs can provide expertise and benefit from services such as containerised energy storage systems, advanced system integration technologies, and clean construction & operations.
The panel also looked into best practices in construction, including in the use of energy saving building materials, high performance isolation materials, the recycling of construction waste, as well as material reuse for a longer lifecycle of buildings and projects.
