8 June 2018, Beijing -  The EU SME Centre’s advocacy team held an inter-Chamber SME Working Group meeting on the topic of business opportunities in regional cities. After the opening remarks by Centre’s Director Chris Cheung, Ms Sabrina Zhang from Dezan Shira and Mr Jurriaan Meyer from SRCC Transit Technology Co. Ltd. presented on the topic.

Ms Sabrina Zhang, China National Tax Partner at Dezan Shira, provided an overview of the types of tier cities in China, the opportunities and challenges lower tier presented vis-à-vis their more wealthier and more well-known counterparts, and the available options for European companies wanting to establish themselves in other cities.

Mr Jurriaan Meyer, General Manager at SRCC Transit Technology Co. Ltd., talked about his and his company’s experience operating in a non-tier 1 city, Jinan. He highlighted challenges such as the low degree of preparation of municipal governments when it came to welcoming foreign investment in the city, and opportunities such as the rapid growth and increasing attractiveness of these cities. “The bottom line was that European companies wanting to establish themselves in regional cities must to have a sound strategy that takes into account multiple considerations such as the type of entity they want to set (branch, subsidiary, new company…), or the advantages and challenges that the city and region offer.”
