On Friday, 30th November, the EU SME Centre and the European Chamber organised a Beijing-Shanghai Inter-Chamber SME Working Group meeting on the recently released E-Commerce Law and it implications for foreign businesses, more concretely SMEs. Mr. Michael Tan, partner at Taylor Wessing and Shanghai Chair of the Legal Working Group, and Mr. Kyle Freeman, Manager with the International Business Advisory team at Dezan Shira & Associates, provided an overview of the E-Commerce Law. Each presenter focused on different aspects of this legislation, such as intellectual property protection, tax obligations, consumer protection measures, personal information and data exports among others.

p>After the presentations, the audience engaged in an animated interaction with the speakers on issues such as the changes in liabilities for merchants and platforms, the applicability of the E-Commerce Law to cross-border operations and the main issues to watch out for within this new legislation as a European SME.”
